By: William Holmes

The following is the Boxing Insider notebook for the week of September 2nd to September 9th, covering the comings and goings in the sport of boxing that you might have missed.

Ricky Burns Draws with Beltran

Ricky Burns (36-2-1) put his lightweight title on the line against Raymundo Beltran (28-6-1) on his home soil in Glasgow, Scotland. Burns had been previously mentioned as a possible opponent for Adrien Broner, but after his showing on Saturday night, it’s highly unlikely to happen. Beltran clearly won the fight and broke Burns’ jaw. Beltran also scored a knockdown in the eighth round with a hard left hook. Unfortunately for Beltran, the judges must have been watching a different fight.

The final scores were 115-113 for Beltran, 114-114, and 115-112 for Burns.

Patrick Nielsen Dominates Majewski

Patrick Nielsen (20-0) defended his WBA Intercontinental Middleweight Title and added the WBO Intercontinental Belt to his collection by defeating Patrick Majewski (21-2) in Frederikshavn, Denmark, on Saturday night. Majewski was knocked down in the fifth round with a left hand. The final scores were 119-108, 119-108, and 118-109.

Ruiz and Fuentes Victorious in Mexico

Moises Fuentes (18-1-1) defeated Luis De La Rosa (22-3-1) in the junior flyweight division on Saturday night in Tapachula, Mexico. Fuentes scored a knockdown and continued to pound De La Rosa before the referee stopped the fight at 2:40 of the first round.

Hugo Ruiz (33-2) fought on a separate card in Nuevo Leon, Mexico, and scratched out a victory over Julio Cesar Miranda (37-9-2) in the bantamweight division. The final scores were 115-113, 115-113, and 114-114.

Tickets are starting at just $50 and immediately after the fights the action will switch live to Las Vegas so that fans can watch the Floyd Mayweather/Canelo Alvarez world title clash on one of the Paramount’s many screens.

Big Apple Boxing Card Announced for Resorts World Casino on September 16th

On Monday, September 16th, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson’s SMS Promotions and DiBella Entertainment (DBE) will host a special Monday night of boxing at the Resorts World Casino, NYC in Jamaica Queens. The card is headlined by junior lightweight Mark Davis (17-0) when he squares off against Newark’s upset-minded Carlos Vinan (10-10-5). Super bantamweight contender Luis Orlandito Del Valle (17-1) will be facing off against Ira Terry (26-11).

The card is also packed with young upcoming prospects. More information can be found at www.smsby50.com or www.dbe1.com

Huck vs. Arslan II Postponed

The rematch between Marco Huck (26-2-1) and Firat Arslan (33-6-2) has been postponed due to Marco Huck suffering a hairline fracture in his left elbow.

“I am gutted to say the least,” said the 28-year-old titlist who suffered the injury in his final sparring session. “I was in such a good shape and ready to go. Now, my preparation was for nothing.” Huck, being the fighter he is, still tried to make the fight against Arslan happen. “After I went to the doctor on Friday, who said that I cannot compete on September 14, I wanted to get a second opinion. However, on Saturday evening another specialist told me that the damage to my elbow is serious and that I will be out for six to eight weeks.”

“Huck vs. Arslan II – that is the fight people want to see. In agreement with all parties involved, we came to the conclusion to postpone this event onto a later date – hopefully to happen in Stuttgart,” stated Chris Meyer, CEO of Sauerland Event. “We will announce the exact date in the following days.” Regarding Huck’s injury, Meyer said: “First of all, Marco Huck has to get well again and cleared by the doctors. His next step would be to start preparations from the scratch.”

Main Events Back on NBC on November 16th- Adamek vs. Glazkov

Boxing is back on network TV on Saturday, November 16th when Tomasz “Goral” Adamek (49-2) takes on Vyacheslav “Czar” Glazkov (15-0-1) on NBC. The match will be for Adamek’s IBF North American Heavyweight Title and has been sanctioned for the #2 position in the heavyweight division.

“We are quite pleased to present this classic match-up between a tough, highly respected veteran and two-division former world champion in Adamek, and an exciting, young up-and-coming former Olympic medalist in Glazkov on our next NBC afternoon broadcast,” said promoter Kathy Duva.

“Being back on network TV for the third time in just 11 months makes this event that much more special. When Adamek appeared on NBC, last December, he brought the biggest television audience of 2012. We won’t be surprised if Adamek-Glazkov garners the biggest audience on broadcast or cable television for 2013, as well.

Chisora Gunning for Adamek and Wilder

British heavyweight star Dereck Chisora has slammed rival heavyweights Tomasz Adamek and Deontay Wilder and told them he’s coming for them next.

Chisora takes on German Edmund Gerber for the Vacant European Heavyweight title on Saturday, 21st September, at the Copper Box Arena with top contenders Adamek and Wilder also on his hit list as he marches towards a second world title shot.

Talks with Adamek’s promoter had been ongoing for Chisora to face the Polish hero, a former world champion at light-heavyweight and cruiserweight, later this year in London, but terms could not be agreed.

Chisora said, “Adamek is a good fighter, but I’d be too much for him if we ever met. I was looking forward to the prospect of fighting him soon, he’s a hero in Poland and Poland is like a second home to me, I love the country and people and it would have been a great fight for them. I don’t blame him taking an easier fight against Glazkov instead of me. From what I saw of the fight between Scott and Glazkov, Scott blatantly won the fight and look what I did to Scott.”

Finchley puncher Del Boy is more enraged that unbeaten Deontay Wilder recently slipped into Great Britain on the quiet to spar with David Haye, when he claimed earlier this year that he couldn’t leave the US to fight Chisora at Wembley Arena on June 15 because of his arrest for battery.

Chisora stormed, “As for Wilder, he couldn’t make our fight in June saying that he couldn’t leave the US, yet a few months later he manages to fly into London with no trouble to spar with Haye. Wilder is just a creation, he’s blowing over empty bodies at the moment which is why he is building up an incredible record. I wasn’t even impressed with his last win over Liakhovich. Once they take the cotton wool wrapping off him and let him lose on a real, live, heavyweight I’ll be there waiting for him.”

Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight Debuts October 5th

Famous for both his signature shuffle and verbal sparring, boxer Cassius Clay quickly rose to fame in the ‘60s, becoming the world’s best-known athlete – and eventually its most controversial. After joining the Nation of Islam and adopting the name Muhammad Ali, he was widely denounced for refusing to be drafted into the U.S. military, based on his religious opposition to the Vietnam War. Stripped of his title and banned from the sport, the self-proclaimed “Greatest” lost nearly four years of his boxing prime to legal battles. In 1971, his case for being a conscientious objector eventually reached the United States Supreme Court, rooted by tradition and conservative ideals with Nixon-appointed Chief Justice Warren E. Burger at its helm.

HBO Films presents in association with SAF Films West MUHAMMAD ALI’S GREATEST FIGHT, starring Academy Award® winner Christopher Plummer (“Beginners”), Academy Award® nominee Frank Langella (“Frost/Nixon”) and Benjamin Walker (“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”); directed by Academy Award® nominee Stephen Frears (“The Queen”) from a script by Shawn Slovo (“A World Apart”); and executive produced by Emmy® winner Frank Doelger (HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and “The Gathering Storm”), Emmy® winner Tracey Scoffield (HBO’s “The Gathering Storm”), Jonathan Cameron and Stephen Frears.

Debuting SATURDAY, OCT. 5 (8:00-9:40 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO, the film goes behind the closed doors of the United States Supreme Court as its nine justices – Chief Justice Warren E. Burger (Frank Langella), Hugo Black (Fritz Weaver), William O. Douglas (Harris Yulin), John Harlan II (Christopher Plummer), William Brennan, Jr. (Peter Gerety), Potter Stewart (Barry Levinson), Byron “Whizzer” White (John Bedford Lloyd), Thurgood Marshall (Danny Glover) and Harry Blackmun (Ed Begley, Jr.) – decide the outcome of Muhammad Ali’s landmark appeal. Justice Harlan, a respected jurist with 15 years on the court, finds himself at odds with the status quo after his perspective is challenged by the contemporary ideals of his new clerk, Kevin Connolly (Benjamin Walker). The film explores the intricate politics behind these historic decisions in a time of rapid social and cultural transformation in the American landscape.
