Philip H Anselmo: Mayweather vs Cotto – Cotto Has No Chance

BY PHILIP H. ANSELMO

At this point, I don’t even care who’s considered guilty of blocking the long-awaited Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight. I’m over it, for now. It seems Floyd has found his next opponent in Miguel Cotto.

Anybody else out there already know what’s gonna happen 3-months before the potential or probable fight on May 5th even occurs?

Can anyone out there say, “W12 Mayweather?”

Look, I have absolutely nada against Miguel Cotto. Actually, I like the guy. He’s a very good fighter in today’s era and a credit to the sport. But there isn’t a chance in hell he beats Floyd.

Now most of you already know how I feel about Floyd. And if you don’t, I’m not wild about his public image (to put it super-mildly), but dammit, the dude is one heck of a boxer (and that’s putting it super-mildly). Truth be told, in my opinion, Floyd is the best friggin’ pure boxer in the world right now. No offense to Manny Pacquiao and his endless horde of supporters, but Floyd is better, period. And until we see them fight, that will remain my opinion.

My extravagantly esteemed colleague Hans Olson was absolutely correct in his recent article “Mayweather vs. Cotto: Thoughts on the Super Fight” http://www.boxinginsider.com/columns/mayweather-vs-cotto-thoughts-on-the-super-fight/, when he stated, “The lack of activity from Floyd has been by design. He’s been able to maintain his health; he’s much younger in “fight years” than Cotto is…”

This fact is FACT. I also agree Floyd is the fresher athlete coming into this fight.

This fight also comes down to styles. And speed. And how Cotto copes with Floyd’s speed, because without a shadow of a doubt, Floyd is the quicker-mitted fighter here. And this fight is about footspeed too. Once again, the way my eyes see, Floyd is fleeter of foot than Cotto.

All-in-all, and I hate to say it, but this fight has all the makings of a one-way blowout in favor of Floyd style-wise. And man, I wouldn’t be surprised if Floyd stops Cotto. Yep. You heard it here first. If Floyd steps-up his game, I can see Miguel taking too much punishment and the fight being stopped somewhere after the 9th round.

I could go into some crazy-deep analysis here, but I’m not gonna. I won’t. All I’m saying is that Mayweather is gonna win, one way or another.

BUT… With all this said, DO NOT get me wrong. I actually hope Miguel wins. I’d love to see Cotto prove me more wrong than wrong is. I just don’t see it happening.

Have a good one-
