Nick Diaz Suspended 12 Months, Fined Percentage Of Purse, Bonus

Bad news for Nick Diaz who appeared before the Nevada State Athletic Commission this week to discuss his failed drug test following a February loss to Carlos Condit at UFC 143. Diaz has been suspended for 12 months and was fined 30% of his UFC 143 purse and any post fight bonus award.

It was the second time Diaz had tested positive for marijuana metabolites while fighting in Las Vegas. The first was following a 2007 win over Takanori Gomi at PRIDE 33.

Diaz had retired from MMA following the UFC 143 and though he had no bouts scheduled and there was no indication of when he would fight again, the suspension prevents him from fighting in Nevada which means he likely would have a problem fighting anywhere in the US in MMA or even Boxing.

Diaz does carry a marijuana license in the State of California but that does not apply in Nevada where he tested positive. Diaz had checked NO on the pre fight questionnaire when asked if he had taken any prescribed or over the counter drugs within two weeks of the fight.

Diaz's attorney Ross Goodman argued that marijuana metabolites are not on the banned substance list with the World Anti-Doping Agency, whose laws have been adopted by the NSAC.
