We join the civilized world in its shock and horror following the unspeakable events at the Boston Marathon today, where athletes from around the world competed in an iconic, legendary sporting event.
At this point the reported casualty count is two dead and perhaps dozens wounded by a terrorist explosion or explosions. To those of us old enough to remember it, this day is reminiscent of the Munich massacre at the 1972 Olympics, when terrorists used a sporting event to commit a devastating attack for what they deemed a political purpose.
In that tragedy 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team who were taken hostage were killed along with a German police officer by the Palestinian group Black September. BoxingInsider will not rush to conclusions about who might be responsible for this heinous 2013 act marring one of the greatest sporting events in the world. We make the comparison because once again deluded sociopaths have committed an atrocity to make some kind of statement. Wherever hole they’re hiding in isn’t deep enough.
Our hearts go out to casualties, their friends and families. This tragedy takes a heavy toll on our spirits, but it will not end our pursuit and love of sport, a noble endeavor that is part of our DNA.
